Catch of the day: Valamar’s sustainable fishing adventure

Welcome to a tale of tradition, sustainability and community spirit. Valamar Riviera has teamed up with WWF Adria and the Komiža Fishermen’s Cooperative in a stellar new initiative that’s making waves in the Adriatic. This collaboration is all about creating positive impact on the environment, on local fishing practices as well as your holiday experience.

At Valamar, we believe that sustainable tourism should benefit everyone – the earth, our guests, our staff and the local community. That’s why we’re thrilled to bring sustainably caught fish from the Komiža Fishermen’s Cooperative right to your plate.

Fishing on Croatia’s island of Vis isn’t just a job; it’s a way of life that goes back centuries. The Komiža Fishermen’s Cooperative, one of the oldest in the region, is at the heart of this tradition. Using small boats and eco-friendly methods, they’re committed to protecting fish stocks and the beautifully diverse seabed of the Adriatic.

In 2022, we began our journey with WWF Adria to enhance the ethics and bolster sustainable practices behind our marine products. Our action plan aims to increase the share of sustainable seafood in our hotels, resorts and camping by 2026. Guess the good news? The delicious hake from Komiža is already a hit on our à la carte and buffet menus at Valamar’s celebrated restaurants.

This partnership is beyond a business deal — it’s a celebration of local heritage and a boost for the community. By working closely with the Komiža Fishermen’s Cooperative, we’re not only providing you with the freshest, tastiest fish but also supporting local fishermen and preserving the rich biodiversity of the Adriatic Sea.

Sure, local hake might be a bit pricier, but we think each tasty morsel is worth every penny. Offering top-quality fish on our menus is our way of ensuring you have a fantastic dining experience and also encouraging other fishermen to adopt eco-friendly practices. Plus, with 78% of our food and drinks sourced locally, you’re truly getting a taste of Croatia while on holiday.

Our partnership with the Komiža Fishermen’s Cooperative has been hailed as one of the best examples of sustainable fishing in the Mediterranean by WWF Adria. It shows that protecting our seas and supporting local communities go hand in hand.

So, as you enjoy your meal at Valamar, know that you’re not just savouring delicious seafood – you’re taking part in a bigger story that’s making a real difference. Dobar tek – and thank
you for being a part of our sea-friendly journey!
